Hybrid Cars vs Gasoline Cars

We have all heard the advantages and positive environmental impacts that hybrid cars get. The benefits are so copious that even if you were to see schade verleden via Autoverleden.nl, you would find almost nada. Is it all true? This study that was released by Worcester Polytechnic Institute completely goes against most positive reasons to purchase a Hybrid. Some excerpts from the study…

The data suggested that the production of hybrids consumes more energy and releases more emissions than the production of conventional cars. This is mostly because of the advanced materials that are required in hybrids. It was also determined that hybrids are not a great investment for the consumer.  For a hybrid to break even with the higher price a
consumer will have to drive primarily in the city and for more miles than the average person keeps a car for.

With the current gas price hovering around $2.80 per gallon, a consumer would have to drive Fusion Hybrid over 150,000 miles, only in the city, before they started saving gas money. Conversely, if all of their driving was done on the highway, they would have to drive nearly two million miles before saving any money.  If we compromise and split the driving evenly between the highway and the city, the consumer will have to drive over 300,000 miles until the extra investment was worth it.

Streamlight Stinger LED

After almost two years of service, I lost my Streamlight Stinger LED flashlight one January night. I looked high and low for it but it was gone. Finally our cold and very snowy Winter has given up it’s hold on Wisconsin and has let Spring finally come. This April morning at the edge of a snow pile I found my Stinger flashlight.

It was a little wet and dirty, laying in a small mud puddle. There were a handful of new deep cuts and scratches in it also. Apparently it was caught by the snowplow and dumped into the pile of snow I found it by. I picked it up and pushed the button…. CLICK ….. and it lit up. The rechargeable battery was  still charged after sitting almost all winter in a pile of snow. How amazing is that? I just couldn’t believe it. It has now been cleaned up and put back to work as my daily use flashlight. Nothing I have seen can beat the white, bright light that it produces in such a portable package. I have been told many times about Stabilant 22A and how good it is. So I bought a bottle and have been using it ever since. The last time I used it I thought to myself, what is this stuff, how does it work, and thought that maybe it was just some expensive snake oil. Well I haven’t done any tests on it myself but I did browse the net a bit. I found out that 22A was a diluted form of straight 22. Here is what I found on the companies 1980’s looking website. I almost think this site was one of the first 100 ever built. If only I knew.

    Stabilant 22 is an initially non-conductive block polymer that when used in a thin film within contacts switches to a conductive state under the effect of the electrical field. The field gradient at which this occurs is set such that the material will remain non-conductive between adjacent contacts in a multiple pin connector environment. 

    Thus, when applied to electromechanical contacts, Stabilant 22 provides the connection reliability of a soldered joint without bonding the contacting surfaces together!

    Contacts are generally the weakest link in any piece of electrical-electronic equipment whether it be an electronic ignition module, an automotive computer, power door locks, or even headlights. The use of Stabilant 22 or its isopropanol-diluted form Stabilant 22A, will make contacts from 10 to 100 times more reliable, eliminating costly callbacks and ensuring customer satisfaction.

I think GM’s new dielectric grease pn 12377900 has some similiar form of Stabilant 22 in it to help with fuel injector and other terminal fretting issues.
